With over 500 rooms spread across two wings, the Calypso is one of the Costa Dorada's giants. As well as its bumper proportions, the hotel's got a big fan base. Families, in particular, love it here. There's a Skytours Kidzone, an arcade and even a bowling alley. And there's plenty in the way of daytime and evening entertainment, too. Think fun, frothy shows and competitions.
In terms of location, the Calypso is set along a main road at the top end of Salou, slightly away from the resort centre. It's a ten to fifteen-minute walk down to the main beach and there are a few restaurants, shops and discos more or less on the doorstep. Plus Portaventura theme park is within easy striking distance by bus or taxi.
Life at the Calypso revolves around the swimming pools. There are two to choose from – one is shaped a bit like a kidney bean and the other is a turquoise figure of eight. Both are set in sun terraces dotted with sunbeds and parasols. Shady pine trees and glossy palms complete the poolside scene. Close by, there's a raised decked area set out with tables and chairs where you can enjoy a drink.
On the food front, the restaurant is buffet style and serves up a selection of hot and cold choices. Breakfast is particularly good with home-from-home favourites the mainstay. Bacon, eggs, baked beans – it's all on the menu. What's more, during the height of summer, al fresco meals are available out on the terrace.
The hotel was recently given a makeover. The main bar is particularly cool, decked out in a striking black and lime colour scheme. As for the bedrooms, they're fairly simple and come with air-conditioning, satellite TVs and terraces or balconies as standard. All in all, a three star hotel that's good value for money.
