"Pack your beach towel, your sunblock and your camera. The third largest Greek island and one of the sunniest places in Europe also features Rhodes Town."
A vibrant city, steeped in history, Rhodes Town is the best location on the island if you want to experience the complete mixture of the old and the new and it now thrives on innumerable boutiques, cafes and plentiful restaurants. The new town is right up there with the 21st century with familiar shops intermingled with cosmopolitan bars and international restaurants. The old town, surrounded by ancient walls, is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and hidden squares housing all types of craft shops, restaurants and bars. Step outside the city walls and take a stroll past one of the many luxury boats anchored in Mandraki harbour where you'll find boats to Symi or Turkey.

If the beach is too crowded for you, there are plenty of others within easy reach. Faliraki has a long stretch of beach, or try the Bay of Ialysos.
The seafood restaurants in the Old Town serve mouthwatering, freshly grilled fish, or for a quick snack, try the tavernas in the little port of Mandraki. Have a healthy, Greek salad - crisp leaves, crumbly feta cheese and plump olives drizzled in rich olive oil. Don't forget to sample some of the wines produced in Rhodes at the local co-operative.
After dark, Rhodes Town's rather dazzling nightlife takes over. You'll have the choice of the bright lights of Bar Street, or a romantic meal in the Old Town. Bar Street's venues range from lively discos to traditional 'bouzouki' - Greek music venues. There's even a casino if you feel like trying your hand at blackjack or roulette.
Sokratous Street is the Turkish quarter, in the centre of the Old Town's shopping district. You'll find a number of luxury shops, including jewellery outlets. In the modern area, to the west of Mandraki Harbour, there are numerous shops selling souvenirs and clothes.
There are regular folk dances performed in the gardens of Andhronikou, or see the Son et Lumiere - sound and light show - which is performed every evening during the summer. Explore the walled city, the 14th century Palace of the Grand Masters, and the candy-striped Mosque of Suleiman in the Turkish quarter. Climb to the top of Monte Smith to see the remains of the ancient Acropolis, the stadium and the Temple of Apollo, as well as the fabulous views.
