Gambia's main city is hardly what you'd call a metropolis, so holidays in Banjul have a small town feel you won't find in many country capitals. There are more shanties and shacks than skyscrapers and the old colonial architecture gives the place an authentic old-world charm. That doesn't mean that Banjul holidays lack sophistication; just down the road is Banjul Beach with its high quality hotels.
Value for money is one of the big attractions of holidays in Banjul. So, even if you're not able to pick up one of those money saving late deals, your Gambian getaway is unlikely to break the bank. What's more, you get luxury hotels into the bargain. Take the Palm Grove Hotel, for example. It's got all the trappings of a top resort hotel, including a fab pool and two restaurants. Not to mention a great range of sports and leisure facilities. Alternatively, if you prefer to be closer to the centre of Banjul, there's the Corinthia Atlantic, just a short walk from the craft market and the Albert market, one of the liveliest and most exotic in the whole of the Gambia.
You'll probably cover off most of Banjul's major sights in a few hours. So, if you're looking for more things to do apart from sunbathing, it's worth getting outside the city. One option is to take a boat trip on nearby Oyster Creek. Gliding past mangroves, you'll get a chance to see some colourful bird life, including kingfishers and pelicans.
